My Project
Teaching Calculus to my high school students has always been a dream of mine! When given the opportunity to fulfill this dream, of course I immediately jumped at it. Being comfortable with the "math" was never a concern of mine; but that daunting question asked by all HS math students, "when will I ever need this", was where my challenge began.
I currently work in a Pre-K - 12 public Montessori school located in one of the "Big 5" school districts in NYS, where materials, manipulatives, and technology is always lacking.
Projectile motion is a topic within Calculus which allows for interdisciplinary collaboration, while also presenting the opportunity for "real world" applications. With the use a drone the students will be able to both view the objects being launched or dropped in real time through pictures and video, it will also allow the students to trace projectile paths and create much more realistic and accurate graphs.
I believe the technology will help the students create a more meaningful concrete understanding of what has historically been an abstract algebraic based topic.
