it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last year the band contained 110 students and we are growing to 140 students this year. Last year, I had to have students share instruments and I had to borrow instruments from two middle schools and a high school in the district. I want to eliminate the need to do either this year.
I teach in a high poverty, low SES public K-8 school.
The school is highly transient, with many low-income apartments near by. The majority of my students are immigrants from Mexico or refugees from Africa. A majority of my students also speak another language besides English at home.
Without the school having instruments that the students can use for free, most of these students would not be able to play an instrument.
My Project
I am requesting a clarinet since last year I had to have many clarinet players share instruments. They did not have to share a mouthpiece, just the clarinet. Because of this we had many issues. Some of the issues that arose were missing reeds, students that didn't get to play some days because the other student forgot to bring the instrument back and students that were unable to practice.
The students hated sharing and it took away from the overall band experience. There were also times that I did not have enough clarinets at all. When this happened I had to go to one of the other schools in our district and borrow their clarinets.
My band program had been growing steadily over the past three years.
This year, the incoming sixth grade class is up thirty students. I have seventy sixth grade band students, where last year I only had thirty. I want to make sure we increase both the quantity and quality of the band's instrument inventory. This way each child has their own high quality instrument.
