Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is a school located in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, CA. The makeup of the school is 98% students of color and 91% of students come from low-income families. This year, students have the opportunity to hold their very own Fashion Club. In this club, they have been fostering a community of safety, inclusion, and empowerment through fashion. Students will hold a Fashion Show at the end of the year to showcase their talents in fashion.
The tools I have requested, including sewing machines and denim sewing kits, would allow students to complete their pieces on time for our Fashion Show and will also allow students to challenge themselves to create their articles of clothing from scratch.
Additionally, these tools will help empower the students to believe that fashion can be a lot more than simply buying new and expensive name brands.
The goal is that through creating their clothing, students will feel uplifted to continue to express themselves authentically. These students continue to challenge themselves to be the best versions of themselves.
