This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Over 95% of our students live in poverty, about 90% are students of color, and many are new arrivals in this country. As a bilingual social worker, I have had students express to me that they feel isolated or unwelcome. Contributing to this is the fact that they don’t see themselves represented in most of the books they read or games they play. Because our families often can’t afford to buy books and games, having them at school is especially important. I have witnessed students’ happiness and excitement when they recognize themselves in stories or on cards. For this reason, I have selected books and games like Where Are You From?, Hair Love and several related to the experience of Latinos, who make up over 60% of our student population.
By donating to this project, you will be giving underrepresented students pride in who they are, leading to confidence to express themselves both academically and socially.
Students deserve to have the vocabulary and tools to talk about their backgrounds and feelings, and for their experiences to be included in their learning.
