Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Welcome to Project Renew Phase 2! We are a fifth grade science class in a high-need urban environment. Over 90% of our students are low-income, many are second language learners, and being from the city there is little opportunity to experience environmental science through exploration of nature.

In phase 1 of Project Renew, students are given an opportunity to experience the environment by growing plants in an indoor garden. Phase 2 takes this project a step further. Time to venture outdoors! We wouldn't just send kids out into the world without a task or background knowledge, would we? No! Students will pour over field guides in order to put names to the natural objects so foreign to their inner city minds! They will reinforce with audio-visual materials, showing them the Earth far beyond our neighborhood or even country! When they are done, they will understand the differences between the various types of earth that are generally not ever thought of as anything other than dirt! This should be called Project Understanding the Earth!

We have the work ethic, now all we need is some donations! Our class needs an assortment of materials. We are requesting composting materials to supplement the learning from our indoor garden. Field guides are needed to assist students as we venture outdoors to expand upon our learning of soil and earth. Hand lenses, soil sifters, and binoculars will help us with our observations of the natural environment. Lastly, I have included as part of this request, a few DVDs to help reinforce the learning once we return to the classroom. We cannot learn Earth science by textbook alone. We have to get the kids outdoors, with knowledge and a sense of ownership for our Earth. This is the goal of Project Renew.

We have five senses with which we learn, and my kids will experience the Earth through every one of them. When they look out of the window, they see streets and buildings. I want to help them see beyond. Nature is out there. The Earth is out there. I'm bringing it to 'em! Be a part of this with me.
