My students need math sorting trays, number games, and patterning boards which are materials that will help special needs students with developing math skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Math may still strike fear into the hearts of many adults, but just think how tough it is to learn the basics when basic counting is a challenge! My Special Ed. Pre-Kers needs many opportunities to practice basic math skills of counting, sorting, and patterning.
I have two groups of 3-5 year-olds with special needs who are in my classroom for two and a half hours a day- not a lot of time when there's so much to do!
They love to play games and right now our classroom is lacking most math materials. They work hard and are proud of their accomplishments which is as it should be. Our school is in a high poverty area but inside the classroom I hope to provide a rich learning environment with a wide variety of enticing materials.
My Project
These math manipulatives and games will allow students of all different mathematical abilities to practice mastered skills and develop new ones. The children in my room struggle with patterning and sequencing as well as counting one object for one (1 to 1 correspondence in teacher speak). Open-ended, colorful, bright, fun counters and manipulatives will grab their attention and make counting and sorting fun!
Math can be tricky enough when you have all of the books, calculators, and materials you need...but imagine if you didn't have what you need to do your best.
Yikes! That's the situation my new little classroom is facing and we are grateful for your help.
