As the primary reading teacher in my classroom, I want to see as many of my students reading on grade level by the end of the year. I need books to help me reach that goal. If students can read, they can accomplish anything in life!
My classroom is filled with 30 smiling students and 2 teachers everyday.
We have students with varying needs, but my co-teacher and I work hard to meet all of those needs. My classroom consists of students from very different backgrounds, including white, African-American, and Hispanic. My 30 students love to interact with each other, even though they have different backgrounds. With 30 students, we have 6 students who are special needs, 6 students who are Hispanic and lack background knowledge, and 11 students who are on free and reduced lunch. My school is a Title I school and is growing rapidly. We have over 900 students from Preschool to 4th grade. Even though we are growing, our school keeps a family feel. We all belong to the same community.
My Project
The most pressing need of my students this year is their lack literacy skills. In order to improve literacy skills, students need to read a large volume of books. As of now, my library is not equipped to handle this pressing need. If I receive these 80 books, my students will be able to read more books and grow as a readers. Everyday in my classroom, students read independently for at least 30 minutes. Each student has a book box that contains 10 books that are on their level. As of now, I do not have enough books for some levels and these new books will fill that need. These books will allow my students to have more choice and books during this read to self time.
With more books in student's book boxes, students will grow as readers.
If my students can increase their reading level, they will become more successful in other academic areas including math, science, and social studies. Students will learn to become more competent and efficient readers and helping them to become more successful later in life.
