My Students
OUR students are wonderful young adults, but struggle with the war between apathy and curiosity. I teach English 11/English 12 in a diversely laid out urban/suburban community and my students range from traditional family structures to sleeping on relatives/friends couches.
Some students enter at the start of the year with weak writing/communication skills and a disconnection from the human experience but a dormant hunger for reading and drive to expand their capacity to learn, while others are so in love with reading that they can't stop and they just can't get their hands on enough books.
While their levels vary from not reading a full book since 6th grade to devouring 1-2 books a week, I have learned over the past year that most often don't have the time or money to visit the public library or buy their own books. The majority are not fans of e-books or digital reading and just want to have a real book in their hands. There is nothing more exciting then when they find a book that speaks to them. Hard copy books have been shelter during the storm of 20-21 and I want to keep that energy alive.
My Project
I have recently joined the ProjectLit community and our school is now officially a chapter member. I reestablished our book & social club since the closing of our campus library. This project will expand representation and diverse stories/characters for both my classroom library as well as our campus chapter/book club allowing 2,000+ students the gift of reading as well as books for monthly reading events.
I can not wait to open up my classroom library to the entire student body and get diverse books into the hands of our students.
