This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When I think of my students, I think of the quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
My students live in a neighborhood that society has marginalized, however, day in and day out they never stop working to achieve their dreams.
I know I may be their teacher-librarian, but they are constantly teaching me about perseverance, determination, and positivity! They inspire me to be a better librarian, teacher, mentor, and friend.
My Project
If you were to ask them, many of our students do not consider themselves readers. Part of the reason they do not identify as readers is because they do not read about their own lived experiences in books. One hundred percent of our school population is comprised of students of color. If books are supposed to be mirrors, our students need to see themselves and their experiences represented in the pages, written by authors of color.
The foundation of civic duty and responsibility is literacy.
Engaging our students with a collection of books that reflect diverse authors and experiences will help us to engage a new generation of citizens who can think broadly and empathetically about the world that they will inherit. Additional books will add value to our collection by reflecting the voices and needs of our students. These books were chosen with students’ stories, experiences, interests, and identities in mind. Diversifying the library has the power to transform students’ reading habits and learning abilities, thus transforming their independence, self esteem, and self worth. This is especially important in historically marginalized communities. It only takes one book to change the life of a student. One book can empower them to call themselves a reader.
