My Students
My students are readers; however, they did not start out that way. I teach all levels of sophomores and a class of seniors. When I was able to implement the idea of choice reading, my students became true readers of books instead of fake reading their way through required novels. For twenty minutes each day, my students get to take a breath, take a break, and read a book. There are no assignments, no expectations, no paper, and no study guides. They just read.
My students are kind and honest and invested in their education.
But many of them are not able to find the time to read on their own. Many of my students tell me they haven't read a book of their own choosing ever. I decided that if I wanted my students to be readers, I needed to provide them contemporary and diverse books to read and the time to do so.
My Project
Last year I started a Project Lit book club in the high school I teach. The goal of Project Lit is to provide contemporary, relevant, and thought-provoking novels to high school students so we can discuss prevalent societal issues.
When I created this club I had the interest, but I needed a way to get the books in the hands of my students and this is where you come in!
Not only will this project get the books I need to continue the voluntary book club, but it will provide my students resources to write about all of the feelings and issues they encounter during their reading and provide the material for the eventual discussion!
