Project Life into 11th & 12th Grade English with an LCD Projector

My students need a LCD projector.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Morin's classroom raised $1,032

This project is fully funded

Help Project Life into my English Classroom! Hi! I am an 11th & 12th grade English Literature teacher at a public charter school in Massachusetts. The school’s mission is to engage students in meaningful work in the community while preparing them for success in college and helping them to gain the confidence and skills to become future leaders. The school serves a diverse, under-served population of urban students. Currently, my students are divided into three classes – one AP Literature class and two college preparation classes. In all of my classes we are working to build critical reading and writing skills that students will need in college. Research shows that an alarmingly high percentage of students graduate high school with a reading level below that of a 10th grader and enter college only to need remediation in writing. The importance of the work we will do in my class in relation to the success of my students in college is significant. Computer literacy is increasingly important today, especially in college where students are asked to contribute to school websites – on blogs and in discussion forums. Technology continues to grow in importance in education. Unfortunately, my school is a young school with limited supplies. My students share LCD projectors and computers sparingly between classrooms. To promote computer literacy, to increase student engagement and to help students develop critical reading and writing skills for college, more resources are needed in my classroom. With an LCD projector in my class, I will better be able to prepare my students for college because: 1. Students will learn critical computer literacy skills necessary for success in college. With an LCD projector in the classroom we will be able to work together on our class website – looking closely at what academic blogging and discussion forums look like in comparison with more casual online conversations. Students will be able to learn critical skills in online communication – using discussion threads, hyperlinking, etc. 2. Students will improve their writing skills. By having access to one another’s work on the class website, students will be able to learn from each other. Publishing their work publicly gives students more motivation to produce quality work. Being able to see the work of other students helps students to grow in their own writing. An LCD projector in the classroom will allow the whole class to look at student work on the class website – critiquing and improving it. Looking at student work is a proven way to help students improve writing skills, and an LCD projector will allow the class to do so effectively and efficiently. 3. Student engagement in the classroom will grow. An LCD projector in the classroom will allow us to watch videos (films of novels and short stories we read, clips of poetry being performed, author interviews, etc), to project photographs (of characters, of authors, of historical events relating to literature we read, etc), to see slideshows (those made by me and those created in student projects), and much more. In a time when students are constantly engaged by multiple forms of media outside of school, the classroom can’t be left behind. The English classroom is much too important to lose students because they are disengaged. Please rest assured that your donation will not go to waste! The LCD projector you will help to purchase for my students will enhance their English literature experience and will be critical in improving their writing skills and helping them to gain the 21st century computer literacy skills necessary to be successful in college. In a community where computer literacy can’t be taken for granted because sometimes computer access is limited to within the walls of the school, your donation will be truly appreciated! Your gift will help my students to be successful this year and in their years to come at college.
