I am an 11th & 12th grade English Literature teacher at a public charter school in Massachusetts. The school’s mission is to engage students in meaningful work in the community while preparing them for success in college and helping them to gain the confidence and skills to become future leaders. The school serves a diverse, under-served population of urban students. Currently, my students are divided into three classes – one AP Literature class and two college preparation classes. In all of my classes we are working to build critical reading and writing skills that students will need in college. Research shows that an alarmingly high percentage of students graduate high school with a reading level below that of a 10th grader and enter college only to need remediation in writing. The importance of the work we will do in my class in relation to the success of my students in college is significant.
