Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am one of four teachers who run a transition program for 18-21-year-old students with disabilities. A PPT team decides if the student is appropriate for the program. There are 35 students in the program, along with seven paraprofessionals. Some of the students have 2:1 paraprofessional support while others have general support.

Our job is to get our young adults ready for independent living in their community.

This means a variety of things and it is different with each student. But, for the most part, our students suffer from low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. But they are determined and resilient and I love that about them.

We strive to get them as many opportunities to get out into the community and expand their world, but if we can't do that, we have to create lessons that bring them out into the real world.

My Project

Looking and applying for jobs these days is all about computer search and company research. The days of pounding the pavement are over. Even when there is a "Help Wanted" sign on a storefront, when the student goes inside to inquire, the directive is to look online for the application. So, when my students are looking for employment, they sit down at a computer and start filling out applications. Do you think that sounds easier than what was done in the past? NO! Creating accounts with user names and passwords are lessons in of themselves. And, at present, we do not have enough technology for the class to apply for employment to go around. The laptops and the charging cart I have ordered will go a long way in helping my students on their way to independence!

Students will be able to simply focus on the task at hand, and not whether they have the correct technology.

Also in this tech savvy world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their computer literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
