My Project
This school year I'm trying to provide my students with various fidget toys with the belief that these toys will help students focus. In the classroom adolescents are faced with many challenges to their attention, especially their self-consciousness of how their peers are evaluating them.
The fidget toys can act as a somatic anchor, gently inviting the student back to the task at hand, while also discharging some of the worries and anxieties that may be building up within them.
Furthermore, many of these toys will be available as a reward in the classroom point system, where students earn points through classroom citizenship and academic performance. These toys thus incentivize attentive behavior that contributes to collective success.
The shaker eggs are part of a practice of meditation and journaling that I'm piloting this year. I want to see how a practice of meditation with the aid of a shaker can help students to regulate their thoughts and emotions.
Additionally, I have added journals to my project. Each student needs to have a journal that is solely dedicated to biology. These journals are submitted once a month for review and grading.
