My Project

Many students at my school do not have their own calculator. On assessment days we find ourselves scrounging for enough calculators, as I do not have a class set. My goal for this project would be to create a calculator library where students can check a calculator out and give something in return in order to ensure that they bring the calculator back.

It would be extremely helpful for students to be able to check out a calculator during class and on an assessment day, this way they can learn how to use their calculator rather than just their phone and be prepared for a test day.

This would also make certain that test days would be less stressful for everyone involved. Students are often texting their friends to borrow a calculator when they remember they need one when they get to class, taking valuable time out that they need to get working on their assessment. I am often running around asking other teachers - who also do not have class sets - if I can borrow a couple calculators to cover the number of students that do not have them.

The students I work with are mostly taking Algebra 3/4 or Algebra 1/2. Those that do not have calculators are often the students who do not have the ability to purchase one on their own and could greatly benefit from checking one out during class.
