Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a curriculum coach at an alternative high school that serves predominantly low income families in an urban setting. Our students are predominantly of color and we have a high percentage of free and reduced lunch applicants. In my role, I work with approximately 50 teachers as a student-centered instructional coach, as well as plan and inform curriculum decisions and facilitate professional learning through PLCs and professional development.

The organizational priorities of the district are equity, diversity and inclusion.

I have my own small student caseload, and I teach a social justice class based on the book 'Just Mercy'. I have completed work with the National Equity Project and have been previously trained with the curriculum of IIRP. I'm interesterd in bringing Restorative Practices, with an emphasis on equity, mindfulness and SEL to my district. I belong to the icivics teaching network, as well as the Abolitionist Teaching Network and the Anti-racist Educators collaborative. I am very passionate about the benefits of this work in communities of color to empower young people to be actively involved in their own civic understanding, with a focus toward action.

My Project

During times of crisis, historically marginalized community members are often negatively impacted the most. This course will focus on how to understand the needs of all school stakeholders may be experiencing from a racial & economic lens.

This course will center identity and belonging as the foundations for equity by design within our school community, climate/ culture and curricular decision-making.

I will learn design strategies to best support all stakeholders, toward a goal to maintain deep commitments to equity and inclusion today and in future times of crisis that communities in poverty face.
