Project Based Science: Building A Tower Garden Green Machine

My students need a Tower Garden growing system so they can act as scientists and conduct experimental research as we work towards building a campus-wide "Green Machine".

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's often said that as we grow older we begin to get less curious. My students defy this. As the school year goes on, they get more curious as they make connections between concepts and start looking at the world in new ways.

My students are curious and creative problem solvers who make insightful observations as they engage with and learn from each other.

I teach at a Title I school with a diverse population of students who show me every day that, if given the chance, they will rise to the occasion.

My Project

“When you teach kids about nature, you teach them to nurture.” These are the words of Stephen Ritz- founder of the Green Bronx Machine and champion of Tower Gardens, an aeroponic growing system designed to grow food indoors in small spaces. Recently, our class received our first Tower Garden and now we’re seeking another so we can build not just exciting science lessons, but our own campus-wide "Green Machine" that allows kids to have a positive impact through growing food.

Adding another Tower Garden to our classroom will allow our students to act as scientists as they design experiments and collect data while determining how to grow more difficult vegetables indoors.

Students will need to account for a lot of factors from light temperatures required by different plants to figuring out how to pollinate plants without the help of insects. It will require creative solutions, critical thinking, and a willingness not to let failure stop them, but spur them on. Most exciting is I don’t have the answers for my students. While people have successfully grown a variety of vegetables indoors using Tower Gardens, they all had to experiment, collect data, get creative, and design different solutions to do so. My students will have to do the same, allowing them to gain authentic scientific experience and collect meaningful data that will be used to guide our our growing.

This project will also build community both in our classroom and at our school by allowing students to be part of something larger than themselves. Already plans are being made for cross-curricular collaboration with the hope of expanding the program to produce food for our school community. This additional Tower Garden will allow my students to conduct the experimental research necessary to make an expansion successful and build our very own “Green Machine".
