In a low-income and high poverty area, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I have the privilege of being the music teacher for my campus.
Many of our students and families were also affected and displaced by Hurricane Harvey.
Some of the same families were also affected by Hurricane Imelda which flooded many homes as well as schools here in out district.
Most of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and parents are not able to afford instruments or supplies for students´ personal use. It brings me great joy to see their progress over the past year and how well they have grown socially, emotionally and academically.
My students are super excited to have music back at our school and have shown interest in various instruments like recorders, pianos, and violins. This semester, we are hoping that donors can help our little bears immerse themselves in everything music with the hands-on experience of having their own instruments and supplies.
This year in music, we are using project-based learning to study instruments and composers. Some of the research based activities will include instrument origins as well as composer histories and timelines.
The tablets, headphones and splitters will allow students to work effectively in groups while completing research and activities.
By immersing my students in learning through research, this will give them a better understanding of the instruments that they are playing as well as help them choose which instrument is best for them based on their preference and experiences while learning.
We have started working on our first program of the school year and every student is excited to perform with instruments for our upcoming Winter program in December. Our goal is to have our projects completed before the program to showcase each students research, learning and growth over the semester!
