My Students
I teach in Massachusetts. We are a pre-k to eighth grade school and draw from the entire city (as opposed to a neighborhood school). This is a low-income, urban school district. All our students receive free breakfast and lunch. I lead an active STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) of about 40 students from grades five through eight.
My science students are a curious group of young people who strive for success.
They are interested in understanding how things work, but they lack some basic resources in our science lab.
My Project
Middle school students love to learn by doing projects. In the time we have been remote learning, my students have been asking for hands-on learning activities. They miss working with their friends. When we return to our school building, I will be incorporating more project-based learning.
These supplies will help them learn by doing individual and group projects.
The Next Generation Science Standards encourages model building, in all it's iterations: "A practice of both science and engineering is to use and construct models as helpful tools for representing ideas and explanations. These tools include diagrams, drawings, physical replicas, mathematical representations, analogies, and computer simulations."
