Help me give my students the supplies needed to kick start the beginning phase of Project Acceptance with a utility cart, coffee carafes, coffee makers, and cups and condiments.
My classroom consists of some pretty amazing human beings, with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. Their ages range from 5 to 10 and span from grades Kindergarten to 5th. My students are learning new things everyday that will help them with their future endeavors; which looks different for each student. We work with each student individually to help them communicate with others, as well as gain the knowledge necessary to function in everyday life.
We are a tribe that strives to build relationships around what we have in common and to celebrate our DIFFERENCES!
We are part of a larger community of classrooms that celebrates inclusion. I teach one of three cross-categorical self-contained classrooms. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to mainstream during small chunks of the day with their typically developing peers. My classroom is about building skills necessary to move forward in their academic environment. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, strengthening communication skills, following directions, and accessing educational content in a variety of ways. We celebrate little wins together each day. I hope this project will be one for the books!
My Project
Supplying my students with these items will not only help teach them the skills needed to function in everyday life, but will also help promote social interaction and communication skills. It is my goal as a teacher, to teach my students lessons that they will value, as well as equip them with skills they will be able to use in and outside of school. With this coffee cart business: "Project Acceptance," our class will start from the grounds up! We will begin with a general understanding and purpose of the business. We will learn about supplies, organizing materials, socializing/communicating with customers, understanding hygiene, learning about uniforms, following rules, kitchen skills, and money handling. These are just a few of the goals we can reach with this project! Our intention is to take this coffee cart throughout the school, during the morning hours, and sell coffee and tea to faculty members. We also plan to set up during after school functions, i.e. PTA nights, Our Community Day, etc.
As a Special Education teacher, and strong advocate of disability awareness and acceptance, I value and encourage real-life learning to students with disabilities.
Giving them the confidence to be independent, interact within the community, and celebrate their differences is my ultimate goal. With this project, my students will be able to gain so many skills necessary to enhance their educational journey! Please help my vision, "Project Acceptance," become a reality!
