Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 800 students in grades K-8 who come from a high poverty/low income neighborhood, and one of the most historic in the city. One hundred percent of the student population qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Music is new to the school, and the community is excited about the variety of musical opportunities being provided to them.
This is the first year the school district has had a full-time certificated K-8 music teacher. My goal is to provide students with a variety of music making experiences, while building community in the school and local neighborhood. All students deserve to be provided with the opportunity of discovering what music means to them through music making activities.
I believe music can be one way to bring a group of people together. It is a way to define your identity, something that students of all age groups can use to express themselves. Offering creative outlets provides balance to people of all ages, at home, work and in the community.
My Project
This year is the first year I have used a Promethean Board. Due to the curriculum with Little Kids Rock, we have projected songs like Can’t Stop the Feeling and Uptown Funk on the Promethean Board to play along with piano chords. We have also used the Musication YouTube channel to project Boomwhackers play along songs. The students need more visual aids, and this project will maximize the use of the Promethean Board in our classroom.
A document camera and interactive technology aids help students learn because it provides them with the visual support they need to stay engaged during the learning process.
The USB Document Camera will be used daily to project me displaying the correct hand position for notes, along with any music needed for activities. The Boomwhackers Beatz Curriculum is an interactive program containing games, performance pieces and composition activities that will engage all grade levels when it is projected on the Promethean Board. The options available offer differentiation, perfect for the diversity of learners and large class sizes. Finally, the UkeOke app will be a sure winner for ukulele lessons. Not only does it contain tutorials for ukulele technique, it has over 1,800 songs to choose from. The backtrack of songs are played while the chords are shown on the screen. The tempo can be changed to accommodate for different skill levels, and after you are done playing it provides you with a report of your accuracy and which chords need to be worked on.
This project will definitely keep our students engaged and will allow them to progress with their musicianship skills faster. Whether it is music literacy, instrument technique, composition activities, or performance pieces, this project helps student learning across all grade levels.
