Project 365: Journaling Their Lives With Pictures Part II
My students need a Mac Mini computer that is up to date and will allow my students to save and edit their journal pictures.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Maxey's classroom raised $933
This project is fully funded
My Students
What if you took a picture every day of your life for a whole year? What an opportunity for reflection and observation of growth through 365 days of your life.
Through the amazing DonorsChoose, my students now have access to a camera to accomplish this project. Now they need a computer that works!
I teach students that are learning English.
That is who I work with every day. I work with students in FOUR different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level.
My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read. My students are all two to three grade levels behind in reading. And their writing suffers GREATLY because of how behind they are in acquiring English. They groan, complain, and often act out so that they will not be "FORCED" to write.
My students are 100% low socioeconomic, receiving free breakfast and lunch every day. They do not have access to the technology that their classroom peers often are. Because of this, my students ABSORB every experience with new technology faster then I ever imagined. Experiences with photography and editing software are only going to expand their world even more.
My Project
I am requesting a Mac Mini Desktop Computer. A previous DonorsChoose project has awarded my students access to an amazing camera to begin their 365 Project - A picture a day to journal away. When I sat down to plan out the project in its entirety, I realized that we were lacking a computer that will be to save and edit these pictures. The ONE computer my students have daily access to is over five years old. It is unable to effectively edit and save my students' high quality pictures
A Mac Mini is a power, full sized computer in a small package. The Mac Mini has great graphic abilities and can bring high performance to my students’ pictures. They will have access to Apple's IPhoto and amazing editing software. My students will be able to take their journals and pictures, and begin to create literacy artwork.
They will begin to view journaling and writing as something that transcends pencil and paper. They will begin to see writing and journaling as artwork.
I want my students to BEG for more writing time, instead of groaning and acting out as ways to avoid it.
I want my students to feel personally connected to each journal article they write. I want authentic experiences to win out over general, boring prompts. I want my students to succeed in acquiring the last, and hardest, piece of learning English as a Second Language. This computer will allow them access to their pictures. It will also give them the opportunity to merge writing and art.
