This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This school year, I’ve had the opportunity to work with math interventions in a supporting role rather than as a traditional classroom teacher. Thanks to this opportunity, I have been able to create deeper and more meaningful connections with my students and am more aware of what their specific needs and abilities are.
My students are amazing, resilient students but are struggling with self-confidence.
This year I have embedded social emotional learning and character building into my classroom activities more than before. I am trying to debunk the notion that they have to be perfect and that perfection is the ultimate goal. One way I do this is by acknowledging all progress that they make, no matter how small.
In spite of the year “gap” in their learning due to the pandemic, my students have risen to the challenge and expectations of coming back to in-person instruction. Together, we work on goal setting and make individualized plans to ensure the goals are met. The items on my list are to reward my students, not for being perfect 4.0 students, but for their progress and perseverance. Some of the items are for them to have straight from the package as they arrive (gift cards, pens, clipboards…), while the vinyl will be used to personalize other items, such as the water bottles, prior to handing them out.
