Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Good programmers write code that humans can understand." ~Martin Fowler. My goal is to create good programmers so that they can land their dream jobs.

Many of my students have limited experience with computers, yet if I had them my tablet, they have it figured out within 5 minutes.

They are technology natives, but they don't get much experience because their families typically have very low incomes. Due to this daily struggle, many of my students are determined to do well in school because they know that it could lead to better opportunities for themselves and a better life for their families. My school, despite budget cuts, strives to push these students to their fullest potential by making the International Baccalaureate Programme - an extremely rigorous and holistic approach to learners - available school-wide. Additionally, they support all students in developing technical, organizational, and personal skills that will prepare them for college, career, and life.

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom, and instead of seeing the teacher lecturing about what velocity is at the front and the students (likely) snoozing in the back, you see students programming their own cars! My new grading approach focuses on students demonstrating their mastery of a concept to me in whatever way they feel will serve them best. These Arduino kits will help me to teach my students to program - an extremely valuable and necessary skill in the labor market - and allow them to demonstrate their mastery of the ideas of physics in new ways. These kits will be used throughout every unit and for many years to come to teach new generations how to program and succeed in any path they choose.

In the classroom alone, these kits will help students to develop programming skills which could help them land their dream college or job in the future, and giving them a new way to demonstrate understanding that isn't a test.

Beyond that, by donating these Arduino programming kits, you are directly contributing to the next generation of engineers and computer programmers. These students could solve the next technology or medical crisis through the skills that you would help me to provide.
