This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I feel so blessed to experience lightbulb after lightbulb going off for my students on a regular basis. Most impactful for me is when a student is not yet verbal when starting my program. Through a grounded routine and repetition they feel safe to utter rhymes or song lyrics as their first verbal contribution to class. It melts my heart every time. Supporting students develop their first language of Spanish has exponential benefits on their social emotional and academic development.
My Project
After a year of virtual classes, Programa Familiar de Lenguaje is ready to safely hold in-person classes outdoors this summer. We will be creating a variety of obstacle courses, as well as circle time activities. These activities will support gross motor development, as well as practice taking turns, develop spatial, color, and number vocabulary development. The activities during class model for parents ways that they can incorporate more movement, language, and song at home. Additionally, paints and glue will be paired with other supplies and used to provide families in need with take home crafts. These crafts will be supported by live or recorded videos to follow along at home.
