My Students

Imagine being greeted everyday with smiles and hugs and the question, "Do we have music today?" These are the children at my school, excited, inquisitive, and always ready to make music.

I teach in a Title I school in rural Oklahoma, where music is a vital part of the curriculum.

Even though most of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch, we continue to rank among the highest in our state in test scores. We have been recognized for being a Blue Ribbon School in 2012 and an A school in Oklahoma.

My Project

Program time is always one of the things students look forward to. At my school, the Christmas program and the Spring program are performed by my third and second graders respectively. Performing on stage provides students the opportunity to speak in a microphone, memorize a line or two, learn fun songs and choreography, and some basic acting skills. Most importantly, they learn to focus on what is going on and that they are part of a performing group. Students are challenged to take the risk of performing for each other, for the student body and of course, their parents. I have seen students that are having trouble in their classrooms come to life on the stage! Performing is fun and students learn to face their “stage” fears and be successful.
