This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title I school, in which more than 40% of the students are of low-income households. The majority of our students are English Language Learners, and range in language proficiency levels from Entering (Beginning) to Commanding (Proficient).
Our students are learning a strong foundation in English, in order to achieve success on the state exam, which tests their English proficiency.
Since they have to be able to speak, listen, read, and write in English, they need all the resources they can get in order to be successful!
My Project
Every year, English Language Learners in grades K-5 are expected to make progress in English by taking the NYSESLAT ( New York State English as a Second Langauage Achievement Test). This state exam measures how well English Language Learners can listen, speak, read and write in English, all within a 3-day span.
Many of our students struggle to bring in basic supplies, such as pencils to school, and number 2 pencils are required for this test!
In order to make sure that our English Language Learners are prepared to take this exam, we would like to eliminate unnecessary stresses and help them focus on making progress on the exam. The sharpener would be used to resharpen the pencils for the other days of the exam.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
