Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Unified Sports gym class was created to give our special needs students an opportunity to connect with our general education students. The design also allows all of our students to develop skills in modeling and teaching. They also experience empathy for one another's struggles and excitement for other student’s achievements that often can go unnoticed in a traditional gym class. This amazing class creates a safe environment that allows students to celebrate our wide range of personalities and abilities.
Please help us fund skateboard lessons from a professional skateboarder for our students with special needs.
The lessons would provide a skateboard, helmet, and protective pads for each of our students to use.
This school year we have done a variety of activities including basketball, volleyball, soccer, and dancing. We now have an opportunity to help our students break out of their comfort zone and learn different skills like balancing and strategizing, which many of their peers get to experience for themselves on a daily basis. This will be a fun finish to our successful year with our Unified Sports students!
My Project
Professional skateboard instructors will provide our students with skateboard lessons to learn basic skills like balancing, pushing, and turning. They will provide each student their own skateboard, helmet, and protective pads.
These lessons will push our students out of their comfort and give them an opportunity to try something new!
Many of our students are working on having more confidence, communication, and helping others. Skateboarding requires dedication, concentration, and the confidence to ask for help. Through these skateboard lessons our students will gain more experience with trying new and difficult things, and working with an instructor to learn something new.
