This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most Wednesdays we produce a podcast that brings a medical professional into our classroom. I want to be able to take the show to their workplaces, as well as improve the production quality and live show interaction. We are creating professional development courses for Athletic Trainers.
I am currently in my eleventh year as a teacher.
I started teaching aquatic science, moved to biology, and now I am teaching Sports Medicine. Each week I teach students how to recognize, treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries. Some students want to become Athletic Trainers, but most are interested in professions related to sports medicine. Our podcast began as my way of recording lessons for students when they were absent. After attending a technology educators workshop I was awakened to the potential of having an interview podcast that would bring industry leaders into our classroom. Each year our podcast has grown in size, notoriety, and production. I have no formal education or schooling on media production. Through our show I am continually growing in my knowledge as an Athletic Trainer.
My Project
To record an interview on-site at hospitals or medical facilities I need to purchase a portable recorder that is dependable and allows me my current equipment. The Zoom H6N is one of the favorite digital recorders for podcasters. Taking the show on the road allows for more diverse guests and the opportunity for a few students to make the trip with me each time to the facility. To improve the show I want to attend the Podcast Movement 2015 event in Dallas, Texas. This is the world’s largest podcasters only conference. I have learned many things through reading blogs, listening to podcasts about podcasts, and trial and error. This convention will allow me to meet many people who are currently podcasting. As Dave Ramsey always says, “If you do rich people stuff long enough then you will eventually become rich people.” Translation: I want to absorb as much podcasting knowledge as I can from the “rich people” or highly successful podcasters so I can enrich my own podcast.
In low socioeconomic areas patients often have long waits for a doctor who can only give only 10 minutes to “fix” the problem and move on, leaving no time for conversation.
With our very unique opportunity that brings medical professionals into our class regularly we are making a difference. You can choose to increase our audio quality and opportunities to schedule high-quality medical professionals and allow the students to meet the professionals they aspire to emulate.
