Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a district where the 87% of my students are economically disadvantaged, 36.8% of students are enrolled in bilingual and English language learning programs and 72.2% students are considered at risk of dropping out of school. I teach middle school social studies at the Del Valle Discipline Alternative Education Program.
When my students arrive at the DAEP campus many of my students are disillusioned and distrustful of school, teachers and the educational system.
These students are the ones that need the most resources, coping skills, positive attention and exposure to positive inputs and feedback to build them up and show them they are capable of making positive changes to improve their situation.
I am fortunate to work at a campus where we are encouraged to “think outside of the box” to engage our students and completing this certification is another step in that direction. I was really surprised at my students’ willingness and receptiveness to trying something new. I am very excited to learn all I can and bring it to my campus for the benefit of my students as well as the staff. My students are resilient, creative and industrious.
My Project
I am taking the world’s only RYT-200 wellness and yoga teacher training designed for educators this Fall 2018 with Breath for Change. The items I have selected to fulfill this project are supplies that I need in order to be able to complete my certification/professional development.
The following supplies are necessary tools for this training: bolsters, mats and meditation cushions.
This training will place physical demands on my body and these tools are necessary components for successful completion of this professional development, much like having the appropriate book for English class is essential to completing English assignments. These supplies are necessary for me to learn the appropriate techniques and strategies in my training in a safe and efficient manner.
Upon completion of this training, I will be taking this training back to my campus to assist with teaching coping skills to "at-risk" youth. These skills are imperative for the long term success of children in life as well as school.
The direct impact will be to further increase our efforts in implementing a rich and varied Social Emotional Learning Plan on our DAEP campus.
