My Project
This professional learning experience will help me to keep my knowledge of literacy instruction up to date so that I can provide resources and strategies to my English Language Learners that are based on the most recent research and literature.
Many of the students I work with are learning to read in a new language.
After this professional learning experience, students will participate in research based lessons. Students will engage in activities to support their content area learning and English Language acquisition. Lessons will include individualized resources and strategies that incorporate daily work in word recognition, reading comprehension and writing.
All course activities will be conducted remotely. There will not be any in-person components.
Excerpt from the Teachers College Columbia University Course Description:
"New Research and Applications for Teaching Reading. The course is open for three weeks in July and will cover the following topics:
Assessment and intervention implications of updated theoretical models of reading.
Speech-to-print methodologies for phonemic awareness, word recognition, and spelling.
Relationships between Vocabulary and reading fluency and instructional applications. Newer research suggestions for teaching inference
Summarization and self-questioning in comprehension, and
academic language
This professional development opportunity offers an update on recent research in our field and how it translates into practice. The course is appropriate for those who have a background in providing evidence-based reading instruction to children, adolescents and/or adults. Teaching applications can be implemented for in-person and remote delivery. Participants submit a final project (lesson plan sequence) based on a session topic that best aligns with their current educational placement."
