This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher's hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world." -David Warlick

I serve an urban public middle school in a low socio-economic area in southern California.

My students are a group of bright 7th and 8th graders who derive from hard-working families and who have to balance their rigorous academic work while tackling the challenges of living in a community plagued by the ills of poverty. My students, regardless of the issues they face on a daily basis, have goals, drive, and most importantly they are hungry for knowledge. They possess great aspirations for change in their neighborhood, our country, and the world. They are surrounded by loving adults and a supportive school community that simply does not have the technological tools needed for them to be ready to face an ever-changing, technology-driven world.

My Project

I will use our iPad Mini to introduce my students to technology that will be used to create documentaries, visual ethnographies, multimedia reports and presentations as well as graphic design projects. I need an iPad Mini and accessories that have the ability to support new computerized programs since we currently only have an outdated desktop that does not support many of the programs I need to make these projects a reality. In order to more efficiently serve my students I will enroll in the course provided by www.escwest.net to better facilitate the teaching of the Common Core State Standards with iPads. I will also take advantage of the workshops provided by http://edtechteacher.org/t21/ipad/ and take part of online professional development sessions by http://www.thinkahead.co.za/. Finally, I will take part in trainings provided by http://www.kokuamai.com/test/flipped/ to learn about the theory of "The Flipped Classroom."

I will present my students with the 21st century technological skills that are required for them successfully master the Common Core State Standards as well as prepare them to be college and career ready upon high school graduation.
