My Project

In today's Digital Age of computers and video game obsession, my second graders spend much of their free time alone glued to screens, playing games, watching youtube, movies, and tv. COVID normalized this and taught us to place even more importance on technology. However, while it can be a wonderful learning tool in many ways, it does not help students to learn social skills, how to communicate and work together in group, skills which are essential to living in society. This project promotes problem solving, oral communication, and social skills, fundamental skills that employers continue to seek in workers for a productive and effective workforce. It focuses on the subject of math, but equally, if not more importantly, it requires students to collaborate. They will work in small groups to visibly solve word problems on 24" x 36" white boards. The white boards on wheels will be used by the teacher for demonstration and instruction utilizing the base- 10 magnetic blocks which are frequently used to teach numbers and operations in second grade math. Having both the portable and rolling white boards will give us the flexibility to move them around the room for group discussion. The chart paper easels are another more permanent means to facilitate visible learning with work we do not want to erase. The playing cards will provide a different way for students to practice addition and subtraction in small groups in a fun, hands on game format. Similarly, the geo boards will provide tangible, way for students to explore learning geometry. All the materials in this project will help to engage students in math by providing them with good old fashioned alternatives to computer and paper pencil learning. Thank you for your support!
