This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Students: Reading. Nothing is more important. Some kids love it. Others avoid the library. Particularly boys. Here's an idea that'll get 3rd, 4th and 5th grade boys into our school library. Also, middle school kids who are reading below grade level. How do we bait the library hook? With Pro Wrestling!

Don't take my word for it.

This idea doesn't come from me. It comes from the kids who leave their ideas in our library Suggestion Box. The Pro-Wrestling books in this project are on a third and fourth grade reading level. They'll be read by kids all the way from third grade right up to eighth grade. Let me tell you something about our school library. It is at a K-8 Center in South Florida. Most of our students are first-generation Americans. Their parents are from the Caribbean or Latin America. Our moms and dads tend to have low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. Why should you help out these children? 1) Our students love to read. 2) Our kids are unlikely to have English language books at home. 3) Over 20% of our students are children with special needs. Kids with physical, mental and social challenges are bused to us from all over our city. 4) We don't have an affluent PTA to help us. The school library really runs on DonorsChoose.org.

My Project

So why Pro Wrestling? The boys love it. Particularly the more reluctant readers. Why 23 books? We already have half a dozen books about Pro-Wrestling. I've watched the boys talking when they go to the library shelves. They compete with each other to read every single book in the series. Imagine how we'll attract the kids to the library if we acquire 23 new titles. Additionally, I've been a librarian long enough to know that it's no good just to have books on the shelves: you have to market them. That's why I'm asking for a life-size cutout figure of John Cena. Think that will get their attention?

How many students will check out these books?

There are about 100 kids in each grade level between 3rd and 8th grade. Wrestling isn't everyone's cup of tea, so let's say the books will attract 20 kids out of 100. That's still 120 kids who will read your books. Your donation will have quite an impact! Particularly when you consider that the kids who read your books are likely to be reluctant readers. Please help us turn those kids on to reading!
