it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
THESE KIDS ROCK! Our class, Modern Band, is not like your Jazz Band or any other conventional ensemble. They are a working Rock Band for every function that takes place on campus, from pep rallies to convocations and visiting guests. Now we're in talks for opening for national acts!
The Modern Band is to our school what The Roots are to Jimmy Fallon.
They come to class to prepare a working set list of songs selected by them, some by request, for gigs around the district. We stand out from other music programs like ever before because they're in charge of the show. This gives them total ownership of their own education while preparing them to work after high school as musicians, giving them a leg up on other students who go to college without this level of professional experience. These young adults defy convention and are breaking barriers because they're not expected to succeed, given the school's supposed socioeconomic location and status. The given indicator is the 98% of students receiving free lunch. They are identified as high risk, because of other factors. Do these student know this, that the odds are against them? You'd never know it to watch them play a show. They play like their lives depend on it. Maybe, in a way, their lives do depend on it.
My Project
The drum set and cymbals I've chosen are considered to be the industry standard. Two of the most recognizable names in the professional drummer world, together, make one amazing drum kit, perfect for live or studio applications. This drum set allows for any style that compliments every single genre. That's our class in a nutshell. As a working band, we need materials that will allows our band to perform any style or genre. We will use this set primarily as our show kit: not a daily rehearsal kit. The drum kit will be available for shows and rehearsals, and will only leave the campus for professional shows, in road-ready cases. No duct tape necessary. Having access to a professional level model will also allow the musician in training to discern from a beginner model to higher level performance equipment suitable for professional shows.
The Fine Arts are integral to the total human experience, therefore essential to the core curriculum.
By contributing to this project, you are helping to keep the arts a part of the total experience, exceeding status quo, where dreams and ideas become a reality. The most exciting part in all this is that we're booking gigs beyond the district. These young musicians will leave here with more than just book knowledge when they move to the next stages of their lives. That's always been our goal.
