it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are in first grade at a Title I school, and every day they are doing the hard work of learning how to be people. They’re learning how to learn, how to interact with one another, and how to be more independent—and that takes a lot of effort, patience, and growth. In our classroom, students earn incentive points each day for showing their best learning behavior. They earn points for things like not giving up, showing respect to classmates, trying again after a mistake, working as a team, and communicating with kindness. These behaviors are the foundation of a positive and successful learning environment.
At the end of each day, without fail, my students ask me, “Ms. Ami, do we have time for prizes?” These small sensory-based rewards—like bubbles, fidget toys, scented pencils, lip balm, and pop-its—are more than just fun.
They help motivate students, support their sensory needs, and recognize the contributions they make to our classroom community. Students who reach their goal for the day get to celebrate their efforts and choose a prize as a reward for their growth, kindness, and perseverance.
