Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school’s mission is to model and teach young children ages 3-7, some of which have autism, how to be respectful citizens by providing them with an incentive to purchase prizes at our school’s store, The BEE Bucks Bodega. Since the implementation of our school’s core values: Being Accountable, Brave, Cooperative, and Safe (ABC’s of PS 112) and the BEE Bucks Bodega, we have seen significant growth in our students’ ability to solve conflicts, handle stressful situations, become problem solvers, and mature into respectful citizens. We have even created the ABC'S Superheroes, who help our tiny scholars practice core value behaviors.

Students earn BEE Bucks by demonstrating any of the ABC'S core values throughout the school day.

They accumulate BEE Bucks in various settings, including classrooms, the cafeteria, hallways, recess, and special classes like Music and Dance. The ultimate goal is for students to save their BEE Bucks to shop at our school store, which opens twice a month on Fridays.

The store offers a diverse range of prizes, including pencils and fidgets, stuffed animals, headphones, puzzles, and so much more. By encouraging students to save rather than spend, we aim to impart valuable financial literacy skills and instill a sense of responsibility. Additionally, students actively participate in running the store, taking on tasks such as inventory management, working the register, and overseeing sales. This hands-on experience fosters teamwork, communication, and leadership, while also giving students a sense of ownership and pride.

Beyond rewarding positive behaviors, the BEE Bucks Bodega serves as a platform to teach real-world skills like saving, budgeting, and collaborative problem-solving. Through this initiative, we strive to create a generation of responsible and thoughtful students who comprehend the significance of both financial management and cooperation.
