My Project
These puppets will provide much-needed accompaniment to my music program. Not only are puppets engaging, but children identify directly with their animated voices and movements in a way that makes them feel safe to share. I use puppets to help children feel comfortable sharing their voices with a group and practicing beat and rhythm as a class. Oftentimes, a child will "sing" an animal sound rather than "sing" words to a song out loud. It works miracles with timid students, students who need pitch-correcting opportunities, and language learners. I also use puppets to help students understand musical form. Two different puppets can represent the A and B sections of a piece of music, and that's only the beginning of the ways puppets can introduce, support, and reinforce musical concepts. My older students even use the puppets to create music videos for third and fourth-grade students who are learning and reviewing multiplication facts.
Puppets provide a safe, effective conduit for musical expression and practice.
I have been borrowing a few puppets from my school district and found that not only do my students learn musical concepts more effectively and grow in a safe, fun environment, but they also stay totally engaged and interested in what we're doing. Class management issues decrease significantly when I use them, and correspondingly, positive behaviors increase. Thank you for donating to my project. I can't wait to begin using my puppets in daily music class study and play!
