Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day, students in my class have the opportunity to earn a prize. The prizes are costly for a non-tenured teacher, however, are very motivating to students with severe behavior needs.
The students at our school are of all different backgrounds.
We have a 73% ESL population. Many of our students experience homelessness, and often take on responsibilities meant for adults. Students do not have many opportunities to get something for themselves, so by providing them with a small token each day when they demonstrate good behavior is rewarding.
My Project
Students in my classroom are on behavior charts which outline what expected behavior looks like at school. When they receive a certain amount of points on their behavior chart, they qualify to earn a prize. Students are very motivated by this. Up to now, their prizes have been things which I have found around my house and are willing to part with (Christmas towels, coloring supplies, bookmarks, etc). The students can have an opportunity to earn new prizes, and not to mention, they would LOVE the gumball machine!
This will improve students motivation to display expected behavior in the classroom throughout their school day.
Students will have the opportunity to earn a motivating snack at the end of their day. They also will be able to eat the mints during tests. Many students request mints prior to taking a big test because it assists them with focusing, and helps them relieve stress.
