My Students
My students are an enthusiastic and curious group of kindergarten through eighth graders at a Chicago Public Schools elementary school on the south side of the city. I work primarily with students who have social-emotional needs identified on their Individual Education Plan. This is a plan developed for diverse learners to meet their educational needs. (If you live outside Chicago, we use "diverse learners" to describe what other states or cities may refer to as special education students). However, I also am the social worker for the entire building, including general education students. We work together to help them meet their social-emotional goals and address mental health issues that they may be having.
My Project
After not being in full-time in-person school for over a year, my students have a variety of social emotional needs and often benefit from private conversations with the social worker. Due to COVID protocols, our school's space is being stretched thin and clinicians are sharing an office.
By creating a separate, private corner in the clinician's office for meeting with students, they can have a private place to see the social worker no matter if there is another adult in another part of the room.
This will increase students' opportunity to share important feelings and reflections.
