This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a teacher of multilingual students in grades three through five. I work with roughly 100 students who are practicing their English language skills.

This year, I am placing a special emphasis on speaking practice, as data from last year's WIDA assessment showed that this was an opportunity for growth among my students.

I am utilizing two computer programs, Flip and Lexia, to give students more opportunities to record their voices and for me to listen to their recordings and give feedback. However, students are often very shy about others hearing their voice, and nervous to speak loudly in class. I have found that they are more willing to speak when they are using a privacy shield, so they aren't distracted by seeing other students in the room and believe that the other students can't hear them recording their voice.

Privacy shields will not only encourage my students to speak up when recording their language samples, but they will be very useful during our spring assessment period, when they'll be used to ensure that students are focusing only on their own assessment. They will hopefully help my students be able to show what they are truly able to do, without feeling self-conscious!
