My Students

My students are second graders in a Dual Language classroom. Approximately half of them are native English speakers, while the other half are native Spanish speakers. Our program is extremely diverse, and every child in our school is eligible for free lunch.

My students come to school ready to learn, with the language of instruction alternating between English and Spanish each day.

They are eager readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists, who are becoming equipped to achieve academic and social success in today's global community.

My Project

Second grade is a big year for our students – it is the time when they really begin to "grow up" and become independent in ways they weren't able to be in their younger years. Lately, my students have become very concerned about privacy, especially when it comes to completing tests or assessments in class; they want their hard work to shine and for everyone to be treated fairly. Because of the way our classroom is set up, students do not have any privacy when it comes to taking tests or completing independent work – in fact, they sit side-by-side throughout the day. For many students, this makes it hard to focus and complete their best work.

We have tried using folders and notebooks as privacy screens in the past, but they tend to fall over and create more distractions.

This set of privacy partitions will allow students to have privacy when needed, thereby improving their independence and focus. It will also help them to better prepare for the testing environment they will soon face as they progress to the upper grades. I have also requested Papermate Flair pens for the students to use as they transition from using pencils in their writing.
