This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of excited and motivated individuals. Our school is small and most students have been at the school since kindergarten. Our school is special because we can really develop a close relationship with each individual student as they grow up.
As a school with a bilingual program, students are immersed in rigorous instruction in both English and Spanish.
A a dual language, bilingual and bicultural educator, I personally understand and appreciate the value of being fluent in two languages and biliterate. These skills open up many doors for success. There are numerous benefits to being bilingual, and students work very hard to access the curriculum despite it being a challenge. We have both Spanish-dominant and English-dominant speakers, which means that one hundred percent of our students are second language learners.
My Project
Currently, I have another project up for art supplies in the classroom. While I teach 6th grade Math and Spanish Language Arts I want to create opportunities for students to engage with the content in fun and creative ways.
This project will help us keep materials organized so that students can maintain focus while also having fun in their learning.
The bins will ideally have markers, crayons, colored pencils, tape and other materials for students organized in group bins. They will learn to share the materials and keep them nice and neat. The privacy shields will be come in hand for testing. We do not have space in the classroom and school to give each student the best area for taking a test so I've typically borrowed these from another teacher. Students respond well to this and my students could really use a permanent set as well as the option to use them when they want to work independently in class.
More than half of students from low‑income households
