My Project
For the last five years, I have been building a comprehensive high school music program at our residential boarding school in Alaska. Many of my students come from backgrounds where access to music education has been limited, so this requires me to be creative in how I approach traditional high school-level music instruction. My focus in these years has been developing a tiered approach to teaching that allows me to lay the foundations in as many music classes as I can for incoming students. This has allowed our program to grow quickly and tackle many high-level skills in a short amount of time.
This semester, I have been given the opportunity to start a separate class that will focus specifically on percussionists and their rudiments.
This excites me because percussionists are often the most ignored members of the band and typically are left on their own to just figure things out. With your help, this project will provide fundamental percussion practice supplies for students' musical growth. These resources are not just about playing an instrument – they are helping my students develop crucial skills that will empower them to be independent musicians and confident contributors to the concert band in the future. These supplies will help me run a focused rudiment class that will allow for whole group, small group, and individual, differentiated instruction. For example, drum mutes and practice pads reduce classroom noise during active practice time.
The curriculum we are focusing on emphasizes the rudiments of percussion, such as proper grip, timing, coordination, and rhythm. As students progress through the class, they not only develop their technique but also a greater sense of discipline, teamwork, self-expression, confidence, and a love for music that will stay with them after they leave this school. Thank you for your support!
