My Project
My students are sharp, witty, full of character and exceptionally bright. Our school is home to Warriors, strong-hearted and tenacious, my classroom is a place for them to get in tune with their creativity and to explore ideas and images that matter to them. Having opportunities to express themselves and to reflect creatively on their experiences throughout the COVID-19 pandemic is a valuable support to students mental and emotional health.
This year it has been a struggle to get enough supplies for the large class sizes since so many students were eager to return to in-person learning.
I am so excited to be able to offer them hands-on learning. The kind of hands-on experiences that human beings have enjoyed for hundreds and thousands of years: printmaking and pottery. Both of these artistic mediums engage the eyes, minds, and hands in ways that can be deeply soothing and satisfying. This year students have been carrying innumerable burden's of stress, these practices will teach them about the self-nurturing aspects of art-making.
The press I am asking for will help us learn about and practice the traditional art of printmaking, once considered the most 'democratic medium' for its ability to bring information and images to the masses. Printmaking is a great way to learn about planning and preparation, mirror-images, and to recreate all kinds of textures and colors with the magic of only paper and ink (and elbow grease of course).
Pottery will be be coming up soon and we will be creating relief tiles that showcase a texture from the biome of the Sonoran desert, the place we call home. Students will explore outside and research the textures and materials available, we will also be picking up trash and helping to recover the natural beauty of our outdoors.
