Help me give my students the materials to complete their printmaking class. Our studio relies on constant supplies of water based inks, linoleum, and monoprint plates to develop their student portfolios.
My students come from all over New York City in all five boroughs. Their one thing in common is their love and passion for art. Some travel up to two hours in their morning commute, because they want the best art education they can get.
Our school is famous; as a result, there are high expectations from the teachers to make sure our students get the best.
However, with little funding, the students have to buy all of their own art materials for each semester. This means that teachers like myself, need to make sure we give the most highly effective lessons and experiences so that it is always worth it for the students to spend so much money in a public school.
My Project
Printmaking is a foundation course here at F. H. L. High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts. In our classes, students learn the history of printmaking in its most basic form.
We work in two separate techniques, relief and intaglio.
We begin by making hanko stamps out of old erasers so that students can practice and understand the concept that cutting away will give you a highlight, and the areas you leave will give you the color of the ink. Also they learn that what they carve will print in reverse. This helps them prepare for working on the linoleum. Students create their first series on linoleum.
After their first series, students learn the art of monoprinting. Then they get to use the same plate to create their first intaglio print: drypoint etching. Students learn that what they carve gets the ink this time.
These materials are vital to our students learning. Thank you for making this possible for us.
