This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an urban high school in a City that has experienced a lot of unrest in the last year. Yet, my students are committed and motivated, and it’s important to me that they have all the resources they need to prepare them for success in high school and beyond.
My students range from 9th grade to 12th grade, and are bright, inquisitive and excited to learn.
However, due to a lack of resources, the school does not have the budget to allow me to purchase supplies. The students love art. For this project, students will learn advocacy through art. I use a choice-based classroom to allow students to explore and learn new mediums. At the end of the year, I want each student to have found a medium that they are proficient in and leave loving art.
My Project
My students need printmaking supplies: Gelli plates, stencils, brayers, and paint. For this project student will focus on advocacy and powerful images to convey the importance of taking action on specific issues in the community though printmaking. We have a very limited budget which makes it hard to bring in new forms of artwork. Currently we do not have a printmaking studio in the classroom. These supplies will be used to start our printmaking studio and introduce a new medium into the classroom for students to explore.
Many of my students have not had art class before and need as many visual aides and tools possible to make their learning process not successful and ensure each student leaves my class loving art.
With basic art supplies my students will be able increase their art ability and knowledge. Art experiences help students across the curriculum and increases cognitive skills. Learning about art will stay with them their entire lives and help them prepare for secondary education.
