This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are all children with Autism. This year I currently have 7 kindergartners. They are 5 and 6 years old. Most of them are non-verbal with limited communication skills.
Children with Autism have difficulty communicating and at times need pictures to help them find their words.
Even the smallest form of non-verbal communication is important for a 5 or 6 year old that does not 'talk'! Picture communication can lead to independence in classroom at first and then at home.
My Project
My students are all children with autism. This year I have all kindergartners. Most of my students are children who are non-verbal and as the teacher and the communication facilitator I need to be able to produce large amounts of communication materials quickly.
Children with autism have difficulty communicating and many non-verbal students are also non-readers, they need pictures to help them find their words.
Even the smallest form of non-verbal communication is important for a 5 year old that does not 'talk'! Picture communication can lead to independence in classroom at first and then at home.
Currently I have a printer in my classroom that jams every time I print and I waste ink, paper, and time. In order to facilitate communication with pictures as it happens I need a printer that is not going to jam every time I need to print. It is frustrating to the student when they need a picture they do not have in order to tell me something or ask for something. My students have shown a want to communicate and now they need the tools!!
