Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are in middle school in an urban area. Most come from low income households and receive free lunch and breakfast. They are so smart and capable. Middle school can be difficult figuring out who you are and navigating social norms versus educational expectations. We work so hard each day to help them in both these areas.

I want to inspire them and give them experiences they might not normally have.

I want for them to not just be successful, but to feel successful. I want them to see that the world is so much bigger than their neighborhood, and they truly have the potential to accomplish great things.

My Project

I had the privilege of working in a research lab over the summer with engineering students. One the the things we did almost daily was work with a 3D printer. This is such an amazing technology and we can do so much with it. I want to share this with my students. For many of them, they had never heard of 3D printing until we began doing lessons on the topic in class.

Many will not get the opportunity to experience such a great new technological innovation.

I want to give them that experience. I would also like to print things using the printer for a classroom rewards system, students can earn these rewards by completing assignments or weekly team challenges. This would be such a great addition to our classroom.
