Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day, regardless of the challenges in their lives, my students work relentlessly hard to become conscious and justice-oriented individuals and use their skills to eliminate the various systems of oppression that keep them and their families from achieving their full potential.
My class is a group of passionate, funny, freedom fighting, and inquisitive kids who want to use their knowledge to improve the city of Richmond.
Our students face a reality full of adversity. At our school, 100% of students qualify and receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students face many challenges at home; however, this does not get in the way of their success. Instead, they remain perseverant and continue to strive and achieve excellence.
My Project
I teach a class of 24 third graders in a high poverty neighborhood in Richmond, California. In third grade, we focus on becoming independent and project-based learners. I am always printing Newsela articles and other online resources that will help my students thrive academically and become critically conscious leaders in their community. Unfortunately, I do not have a printer of my own, and my school refuses to provide me with one; thus, I have to print stuff from home or use my colleague's printer. For this reason, I am requesting a color printer and ink cartridges for student use in my classroom. My students will be creating several projects throughout the school year and would benefit from a color printer, so that they can print news articles, diagrams, reports, and so much more.
